Louisville 7 — Clemson 5 (F/10 Innings — Game Summary)
- Louisville’s Jimmy Nugent bookended the game with a pair of home runs as the Cardinals swept Clemson with an extra-inning victory on Sunday. However, the Tigers had multiple opportunities to prevent the game from lasting for nearly four hours
- The frustrating day at the plate started immediately for the Tigers. Clemson left the bases loaded in the first and stranded two runners in the second, ultimately leaving seventeen men on base. The Tigers were just 5-of-22 (.227) with runners aboard and 2-of-13 (.154) with men in scoring position. Clemson also drew fourteen walks, with only two of them resulting in runs.
- The teams traded blows through the top of the fifth with UofL scratching out a 4-3 lead midway through the game
- In the bottom of the 8th, Tague Davis added an insurance run for the Cardinals with a lead-off HR to make it 5-3 Louisville. His 26th long ball of the season set a new program record for homers in a single season
- After struggling all day with runners on base, the Tigers finally came up clutch in the top of the ninth. Jason Fultz, Jr., started the rally with a lead-off single. That was followed by a Tyler Lichtenberger walk to put runners at first and second with no outs. Bryce Clavon was able to lay down a perfect sacrifice bunt to move the potential tying runs into scoring position with one out. Pinch hitter Jay Dillard struck out, leaving Nate Savoie as Clemson’s final opportunity
- The Cardinals wanted nothing to do with the Tiger slugger and intentionally walked him after throwing two straight balls to load the bases. That brought up Tryston McCladdie, who was 0-for-5 on the day. After taking a strike, the left-hander stroked a single up the middle to drive in the tying runs and send the game to the bottom of the ninth tied at 5-5
- The game remained tied entering the home half of the 10th. Then, Nugent finished the scoring the same way he started it …
- Following the sweep, Clemson drops to 26-17 overall and 6-15 in ACC play with a tough slate of games upcoming. The Tigers’ next seven games are against teams ranked inside this week’s “Top 25” … Boston College (05/01-05/03), @ Coastal Carolina (05/05), and Florida State (05/08-05/10)
