South Carolina recently lost a commitment from WR Jaiden Kelly-Murray, and that’s just given receivers coach Mike Furrey even more of a reason to turn up his pursuit of WR DJ Huggins (5-11 165) of Kennesaw, GA. Huggins was in to see the Gamecocks practice on March 21st, and he returned for their final spring outing last Saturday.
“It was the last practice and energy was high and real competitive,” Huggins said. ‘I got to see the QBs throw the ball around a lot, receivers making catches. Definitely enjoyed practice. The energy was just real high. I enjoyed it.”
Huggins and Furrey also had time to catch up with one another, and he heard more from his potential position coach about his plans for him.
“They like getting the ball in playmakers’ hands, which is something that definitely attracts me,” Huggins said. “Coach Furrey talked to me saying the slot, and I can play some outside.”
Huggins also made spring visits to Georgia and Alabama. He had looked at making a visit to Arkansas on Friday, but could not work out the trip.
He is going back to USC on May 17th for a junior day. He also has official visits set with Georgia on June 5th, Alabama on June 12th, and USC on June 19th. He also plans an official visit to Kansas.
Those are the five schools that stand out the most to him right now, and Huggins added that he does have a favorite.
“Probably right now, probably SC for sure,” Huggins said. “South Carolina, just because of the effort they’ve put in.”
Last season, Huggins had 67 catches for 1127 yards and 12 touchdowns.
