STRecruiting: South Carolina DB coach Torrian Gray makes his move for long and lean Georgia corner

Nothing like a phone call delivering your first SEC offer to cap off a holiday trip to Hawaii.

That was the case with CB Kelvin Millington (6-4 185) of Bogart, GA, on Tuesday afternoon. South Carolina secondary coach Torrian Gray had been contemplating making an offer to Millington a little bit later in the process, then decided there was no reason to wait any longer.

“I was actually in Hawaii when they called me on spring break,” Millington said.  “They were like, we want to get you up here in front of the head coach and defensive coordinator so they can put eyes on you, and we can offer you then.  On my flight back, I hit him up, and he was like, we don’t want to waste any more time, and go ahead and offer.  It’s going to help my recruitment a lot.  I actually have family up there (Greenville), and they are big Gamecock fans.”

Millington has not yet visited South Carolina, so Gray hasn’t seen him in person. But he’s watched the film, and apparently that was enough to convince him Millington would be a good fit in his secondary.

“He said they do a great job developing the players,” Millington said.  “He said he likes long, tall corners with speed and athleticism.  Before he offered me, he was asking me for my measurables…can you dunk, what’s your forty, all this.  So when he goes up to the head coach, it makes it easier for him to be like, we got this dog to go play.  He said he also likes the flexibility, my ability to play multiple positions.”

The Gamecocks have now played their hand with Millington, while Clemson, one of his early favorites he visited in March, has not. So now, he has to adjust his thinking, with South Carolina as more of a factor.

“They kind of jumped up,” Millington said.  “I was kind of liking Clemson, but Clemson is a little big slower in the process.  I mean, they have a great program, and whatever time it takes them to evaluate me, that’s on them.  South Carolina pulled the trigger on me, and I kind of find the love for the spot.  And there’s the family ties as well.”

Millington will take an official visit to USC either the first or second weekend in June. This spring, he has also been to Georgia, Navy, Alabama, and Georgia Southern. He is going to Virginia Tech on Friday and Wake Forest on Saturday to complete his spring visits.

Texas Tech offered Millington on Tuesday night, and he also has offers from Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, East Carolina, Wake Forest, Cincinnati, Toledo, Princeton, Yale, Penn, Brown, Army and others.

Last season, Millington had 62 tackles with 14 pass deflections and three interceptions.
