Florida completes sweep of South Carolina Sunday with 13-3 win in seven innings (AUDIO)

  • Florida didn’t need the great pitching of the previous two days to defeat the Gamecocks for an eighth straight time because their bats came to life with 11 hits, including a grand slam and a two-run homer.
  • The Gators loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first against Riley Goodman. A sac fly scored one run, and a double to left plated two more and chased Goodman, who was replaced by Alex Valentin, who got the final out.
  • The Gamecocks, however, got up off the deck and tied the game with three runs in the top of the second. With runners on first and second and one out, Luke Yuhasz hit his first homer as a Gamecock to tie the game at 3-3. With two outs, Will Craddock doubled to left, but he was stranded when Tyler Bak grounded back to the pitcher.
  • The momentum in the USC dugout quickly moved back across the field. A pair of singles put runners on the corners to start the bottom of the third. A sac fly gave Florida a 4-3 lead, and a two-run homer by Brendan Lawson made it 6-3.
  • Valentin (0-1) got into more trouble the next inning, loading the bases with one out. Brandon Stone replaced Valentin and promptly walked in one run before Cash Strayer took him deep for a grand slam and an 11-3 lead.
  • The Gamecocks had a chance to respond in the fifth by loading the bases with one out. Florida starter Cooper Walls was pulled for Luke McNeillie, and he got a foul out to first and a fly ball to center to end the threat.
  • Florida padded the lead with two runs in the bottom of the fifth for the 13-3 lead, and it was then a matter of whether the Gamecocks could score a run to extend the game beyond the top of the seventh. They had runners on first and second with one out in the sixth, but could not score. They went down in order in the top of the seventh.
  • The Gamecocks managed seven hits off the two Florida pitchers, and drew one walk, but they struck out eight more times, raising the total to 34 for the weekend. The Gamecocks had a total of 11 hits in 95 at-bats (.120) for the weekend.
  • USC, which has lost four straight, is now 12-9 and 0-3 in the SEC. The Gamecocks will host Charlotte on Tuesday afternoon at 4:00 PM. Arkansas will visit Columbia for a three-game series starting on Friday night.
