By a 16-0 vote, the Executive Committee of the South Carolina High School League voted Monday afternoon to accept the retirement plan for long-time Executive Director Dr. Jerome Singleton. Singleton, who has served in his role for over 20 years, will retire no later than July 1st of 2027, assuming the League has an acceptable replacement at that time.
Singleton’s leadership of the League had become a hot-button topic in the state legislature, with a bill to dissolve the organization and replace it with a group directed by the legislature working its way through the House
Singleton’s retirement could be viewed as a workable compromise that will satisfy legislators looking for a change in the operation of the League.
The High School League is not a state agency, but it is funded by its membership, which is made up of state schools funded by the legislature.
