Like any coach cranking up his recruiting efforts at a new school, South Carolina OC and quarterbacks coach Kendal Briles is going after guys he knows and has relationships with, especially from Texas, which he recruited while at TCU, Arkansas and Baylor. One of those he just offered is WR Trey Haralson (6-1 190) of Tyler, who is blossoming as a major recruit in the rose capital of the world.
“When Coach Briles was at TCU, I knew him and we talked a lot,” Haralson said. “So, when he moved to South Carolina, he was like, I’ve got to get this guy, and we made it happen. I’d say the relationship is pretty strong. We talk at least twice a week. I like how honest of a coach he is and who all he has coached. He’s a real honest coach. He’s going to tell you the real thing.”
Haralson has not been to USC, but he plans to visit to watch a spring practice. However, he’s watched the Gamecocks from afar and likes how the receivers work with quarterback LaNorris Sellers.
“I like how they used their receivers last year,” he said. “With the versatile quarterback, everything was put together so perfectly.”
Last season, Haralson had 60 catches for 952 yards and 12 touchdowns. He averaged 16 yards per catch. For his career, he has 95 catches 1645 yards and 24 touchdowns.
And what do coaches say they like most about him as a receiver?
“How well I am with the ball in my hands,” Haralson said. What happens with the ball in your hands? “Touchdown. Yes sir, touchdown. I have very good balance. You’re not going to take me down. No matter how many people come at me, it’s hard to tackle me.”
Haralson has South Carolina in his top six right now along with TCU, Tennessee, Arizona State, Ole Miss and Texas Tech. He has not set any junior day or other visits, but those are six he wants to see with an eye towards a spring decision. He also has offers from Texas, Utah, Florida State, Nebraska, Illinois, Penn State and others.
