Clemson 69-Miami 59 Game Summary

  • Miami came into the game third in the ACC in scoring at over 88 points per game. The 59 points in this one is the Hurricanes low scoring mark of the season.
  • Clemson scored the game’s first eight points. As a sign of things to come Carter Welling hit s three off of a turnover for the game’s first points. He would finish with a season high 18 points, and Clemson would force 16 turnovers they would turn into 14 points.
  • Miami got as close as five in the first half before the Tigers eventually built an 11 point lead. They led by nine at the half 35-26 with Welling scoring 10 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
  • Welling made two free throws to open the second half scoring, and when RJ Godfrey dropped in a hook shot, the Tigers led by 13 at 39-26.
  • Miami got the lead down to eight at 43-35 with 15:10 left, then Clemson delivered the knockout blow. A 7-0 run, with five points coming off two turnovers, staked the Tigers to a 50-35 with with 11:46 to play.
  • Eight points was as close as Miami could get the rest of the way as the Tigers would not miss. They shot 13-20 (65% for the second half, including three from downtown. Clemson missed back-to-back field goal attempts only once in the second half, and made 10 of their final 13 attempts, which included those made three-point shots.
  • Clemson finished with a 52.9% shooting mark for the day, while Miami was held to 39.9% shooting
  • Welling led three Tigers in double figures with his 18 points, and he also had a team high nine rebounds. Miami was led by Shelton Henderson with 22 points. The Canes’ top two scorers, Malik Renau and Tre Donaldson, who came in to the game averaging a combined 37 points per game, were held to a combined 16 points.
  • Clemson improved to 6-0 in the ACC, which as of Saturday afternoon gave the Tigers the lead alone in the conference race. Duke can tie them at 5-0 with a win at Stanford Saturday night. Clemson has won 24 of its last 26 ACC games. The Tigers are on a nine game wining streak and are 16-3 overall. They will host NC State on Tuesday night.
  • Miami saw it’s ten game winning streak snapped. The Hurricanes are 15-3 overall and 4-1 in the ACC. They will host Florida State on Tuesday night.
