WILLIAMS-BRICE STADIUM: South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers is the big man in his family when it comes to Gamecock football. But younger brother Jayden is beginning to forge his own reputation as a big-play maker as well.
On the first play of Saturday’s game against Coastal Carolina, Jayden took a pass from his older brother 75 yards for a touchdown, and that set the tone for a 51-7 Gamecock victory that broke a five-game losing streak and provided some much-needed confidence going into next week’s Palmetto Bowl.
That one play was one yard short of matching the Gamecocks’ total offensive output in the second half of last week’s loss at Texas A&M.
LaNorris Sellers and Brady Hunt scored on short runs to give USC a 20-0 lead after a quarter. Sellers found Donovan Murph in the back of the end zone for a three-yard touchdown pass, then ran in from five yards out four minutes later for a 34-0 lead in the second quarter. William Joyce hit a 47-yard field goal on the final play of the half for a 37-0 lead.
Shane Beamer kept his starters in for the third quarter, and Hunt scored on another goal line surge for a 44-0 lead after three quarters.
The Gamecock defense pitched a shutout on the scoreboard. The only Chanticleer points came on a blocked punt by Jameson Tucker at the USC 17 that he recovered and returned for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. The Chants’ offense, which came into the game having scored at least 40 points in four straight games, managed just 220 yards.
Sellers had a superb, all-around game, completing 16-20 passes for 274 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns. His 356 total yards and the four touchdowns he was responsible for are both season highs. And Little Brother had four catches for a career high 127 yards and a touchdown.
The Gamecocks played without receiver Nyck Harbor, who suffered a chest injury last week, and defensive end Dylan Stewart, who was a game time scratch with the same injury that had him on the questionable list for Ole Miss. Beamer said he expects both to be fine for Clemson. The Gamecocks did not appear to suffer any injuries on Saturday.
Also, defensive line coach Travian Robertson was in the coaches’ box for the first time since his serious car crash in September that killed one and nearly claimed his life. He was back on the practice field working with his players during the week, according to Beamer.
USC is now 4-7 and will close out the season at home next Saturday against Clemson. Coastal is 6-5 and will face James Madison at home next week.
