CLEMSON – Clemson’s (6-5, 4-4 ACC) final home game was marked by a military celebration and seniors.
Much of the day is a celebration of the country, and an appreciation for those who have just played their final game in Death Valley.
Following the Tigers’ 45-10 victory over the Furman Paladins (6-6), the celebration of Clemson’s bowl eligibility can also be had.
Clemson’s offense scored on its opening three drives, resulting in an early 17-0 lead for the home Tigers as the game was quickly out of reach before the fans’ seats were warm.
Cade Klubnik’s final home game with the Tigers was brief, but he exited the game on a high note.
The senior quarterback completed 60 percent of his throws, hitting Antonio Williams twice for two touchdowns as the pair on offense helped give the Tigers a comfortable lead against Furman.
Clemson’s offense hit a rut until freshman QB Chris Denson came in and gave the crowd a late spark.
He quickly became the Tigers’ leading rusher on the evening with 106 yards, exploding for a 50-yard scramble out of a draw play, following the hole his blockers set up.
Soon after, Denson found Logan Brooking for an easy score, connecting on a four-yard touchdown that put the Tigers up by 28 points.
Denson wasn’t down there, leading another scoring drive where he scrambled for an electric 10-yard rushing touchdown.
Defensively, the Paladins’ offense was held in check for most of the matchup. Sophomore linebacker Sammy Brown recorded three tackles, a fourth-down stop, and an interception as the Tigers held their FCS opponent in check.
Despite a solid performance on that side of the ball, standout defensive end Jahiem Lawson was seen exiting the game on crutches.
The Tigers led by as much as 31, but the Paladins chipped into that lead in the second half, bringing the game within 21 points.
Clemson improves to 6-5 on the season, and is officially bowl eligible.
This is the Tigers’ 33rd straight win over the Paladins.
