



COLONIAL LIFE ARENA: The second ranked South Carolina women opened the season in style Monday night with a 94-54 win over Grand Canyon in a game that pitted the Gamecocks against their former assistant Wiston Gandy, who is in his first season as head coach of the Antelopes.
As expected, the game was never in doubt. The Gamecocks raced to a 29-10 lead after a quarter and led 60-31 at the half. They shot 67% with nine three-pointers in the first twenty minutes.
The lead never dropped under 30 points over the final 16 minutes, and Dawn Staley was able to go liberally to her bench the rest of the way. Nine of the ten Gamecocks who played scored, with five in double figures.
Florida State transfer Ta’Niya Latson, led the way with 20 points. Tessa Johnson added 19 points.
The Gamecocks shot 60% for the game while holding Grand Canyon to 27%. They also won big in the paint (40-18) and in fastbreak points (32-2).
USC is back at home Friday night to face Bowling Green.
