South Carolina continued to bolster its defense through the NCAA Transfer Portal Monday landing a commitment from former Alabama and Florida State linebacker Shawn Murphy. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound Virginia native will bring a combination of size, athleticism, and experience to Columbia.
Over two seasons in 2022 and 2023 with the Crimson Tide, Murphy appeared in 18 game recording five tackles and a pass breakup. Last season with the Seminoles he played in four games and registered 13 tackles with two tackles for loss.
Murphy’s football journey is decorated with accolades, including the prestigious 2021 Dick Butkus High School Linebacker of the Year award. At Unity Reed High School, he showcased his playmaking ability by tallying 116 tackles, 20 tackles for loss, six sacks, and two interceptions during his senior year, leading his team to the Class 6 state playoffs.
By securing Murphy, the Gamecocks addressed a critical need at linebacker. He gives USC five linebackers in their 2025 class of newcomers which now totals 30 including five transfers from other major programs.
