NASCAR driver Aric Almirola thought he finished 20th in this past Sunday’s race at Talladega Superspeedway. However, once the dust had settled and the replay tape stopped rewinding, NASCAR officially recorded him in 22nd position. It’s the kind of one step forward, two-step-back dance that Almirola and the #10 team have repeated thus far in 2023.
“I feel like we’ve had a lot of speed in our cars to start the season,” Almirola told SportsTalk SC on Tuesday. We’ve had a lot of bad luck, so the results aren’t really indicative of how well we as a race team have run. I think the last three weeks, we’ve really turned the corner.”
Almirola is doing a publicity tour for the upcoming Goodyear 400 as part of NASCAR’s “Throwback Weekend” at Darlington Raceway on May 12th through the 14th. The Stewart-Haas Racing driver says he really loves the track and the theme of the race weekend at Darlington.
“It is arguably one of the most challenging race tracks we go to,” Almirola explained. “You have to respect Darlington so much because if you don’t and you are a little bit over aggressive, it’ll jump up and bite you.”
In our conversation with him, Almirola also elaborated on what led to his decision not to retire after last season. He also discussed this past weekend’s race at Talladega and where his team is with regards to a throwback paint scheme for Darlington.
