Beaufort Eagles 3A State Champions

In this era of pass-happy football, Beaufort won one for the old guys. The Eagles defeated Powdersville 41-31 Thursday night at Benedict College to win the 3A Championship and did so without attempting a pass. Instead, the Eagles rushed for 424 yards on 67 plays.

Powdersville jumped out to a 14-0 lead but Beaufort tied the game on a pair of touchdown runs by Colton Phares, one of 31 yards. The Patriots quickly retook the lead with a 69-yard touchdown run by Thomas Williams. Kacy Fields returned the ensuing kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown make it 21-21. The Patriots kicked a late field goal to take a 24-21 lead into halftime.

The teams exchanged third quarter touchdowns and then Fields broke off a 75-yard touchdown run late in the quarter to give the Eagles the lead for good at 33-31. Fields added a short touchdown run in the fourth quarter to cap the scoring.

Fields finished the night with 219 rushing yards on 37 carries and 3 touchdowns, along with his kickoff return for a score. Phares had 198 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on 28 carries. Williams led Powdersville with 236 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns on 20 carries.
