The Benedict Tigers showed a lot of progress in year one under Chennis Berry going 5-5 and finishing the season with back-to-back victories. Nineteen starters return, ten on offense led by quarterback Eric Phoenix who passed for 1891 yards and 12 touchdowns in seven games. But Southern University transfer John Lampley is providing strong competition in camp.
On defense, tackle Loobert Denelus and safety Ja’Ron Kilpatrick are two of the standouts from a group that allowed 325 yards and 23 points per game.
The Tigers were voted second in the East Division in the pre-season SIAC poll behind defending champion Albany State.
Friday night we were joined by Coach Berry along with Kilpatrick and starting center Mitch Romig.
