Clemson 7 — Charlotte 3 (Game Summary)

  • Of the 14 players who saw action for Clemson on Tuesday night, Jacob Jarrell and Ariston Veasey may have been the most important. Jarrell provided some early offense for the Tigers, while Veasey extinguished a giant threat in the 8th inning to preserve Clemson’s victory over Charlotte.
  • Clemson was ready to roll as soon as the first pitch was thrown in Uptown Charlotte. The Tigers scored six runs in the opening inning as eleven batters came to the plate, including leading hitter Tryston McCladdie. McCladdie had been out of the lineup since being hit in the face in the series finale against Stanford on April 5th. The RF wore a protective mask on his batting helmet to protect his face as he batted second in his return to the lineup. McCladdie walked and scored a run as part of Clemson’s uprising in the first
  • The big blows in that opening frame were a 3-run HR from Jarrell, his 14th of the season, and a two-run double off the bat of Jackson Moore. Jarrell’s homer was also the 40th of his career, moving him within five of Caden Grice for 10th all-time at Clemson
  • Luke Gaffney delivered his second run of the contest with an RBI base hit in the top of the 4th to up the Tigers’ advantage to 7-0
  • Charlotte made things intriguing in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs on an RBI double and a 2-run HR from Todd Hudson to make it a 7-3 Clemson lead heading to the sixth. It could have been an even bigger inning for the home team, as the 49ers stranded runners at first and second
  • 49er pitching kept Clemson at bay until the bottom of the 8th inning, when Charlotte loaded the bases with nobody out. However, Veasey came out of the Tiger bullpen to strikeout the side and keep the four-run edge heading to the 9th. Tiger pitching struck out a total of thirteen 49ers, with Justin LeGuernic and Veasey combining for 8 K’s
  • Clemson travels to Charlottesville to begin a three-game ACC series with the Cavaliers on Thursday night at 7pm
