No luck with the Irish: Notre Dame finishes off sweep of Clemson 7-4 as Tigers strand a dozen runners

Drew Titsworth suffered his first loss of the season (Clemson baseball X)

Notre Dame 7 – Clemson 4 Game Summary

  • For the second straight game, Clemson had plenty of traffic on the basepaths but didn’t cash in often enough to avoid a third straight loss to Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., Sunday.
  • The Tigers fell behind early in each of the three losses, including Sunday’s finale. Notre Dame’s Drew Berkland continued to plague Clemson pitching, doubling and scoring in the first to put the Irish up 1-0.
  • Clemson tied the game up 1-1 when Jack Crighton came home on Tryston McCladdie’s sacrifice fly in the top of the third.
  • With the Irish holding a 3-1 lead in the fifth, Davis Johnson brought home two more with a bases-loaded single to center that chased reliever Talan Bell. Notre Dame added two more in the sixth that were charged to Joe Allen, effectively putting the game out of reach.
  • The Tigers posted 13 hits, but all were singles. Clemson didn’t have an extra-base hit in Game 1 or Game 3 of the series. Clemson stranded at least one runner in every inning, including leaving a pair on base in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.
  • Clemson DH Nate Savoie was 4-for-5, raising his season average to .402.
  • Tigers righthander Drew Titsworth (L, 3-1) surrendered three runs, two earned, in four innings.
  • Clemson (18-7, 1-5) won’t get a reprieve in the schedule as 16th-ranked Coastal Carolina will pay a visit to Doug Kingsmore Stadium, Tuesday. First pitch between the Tigers and the Chanticleers is scheduled for 7 p.m.
