Unintended consequence? USC and Miami cancel their home-and-home football series

With nine SEC games and Clemson, USC’s dance card is quite full (Gamecock Athletics)

The SEC and ACC are each moving to nine conference games in football starting next season. As part of that schedule, the SEC is also mandating its teams to schedule one additional “high quality” non-conference opponent from the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, or Notre Dame. So with Clemson already on the slate each year, the Gamecocks evidently didn’t feel the need to play another Power 4 school. The Miami Hurricanes must have felt the same.

According to a release from USC, Carolina and Miami have mutually agreed to cancel their home-and-home football series for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. The Hurricanes were scheduled to play at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia, S.C., in 2026, with the Gamecocks making the trip to Hard Rock Stadium in 2027.

South Carolina has a non-conference home game against Towson and a road game at Clemson on its 2026 slate and is actively pursuing a third non-conference opponent. Miami’s three 2026 non-conference games are Florida A&M (home), Central Michigan (home), and Notre Dame (away).
