WILLIAMS-BRICE STADIUM: There were a lot of things to like and few things to dislike in South Carolina’s 35-13 win over Kentucky Saturday night at Williams-Brice Stadium. The Gamecocks picked up their first SEC win of the season in three tries, and extended their winning streak over the Wildcats to four games.
The game turned in less than a minute in the early part of the second quarter. With Kentucky leading 10-7, Gamecock defensive end Dylan Stewart sacked Kentucky quarterback Cutter Boley and forced a fumble that was picked up by JT Geer and returned 41 yards for the go-ahead score.
Forty-five seconds later, the Gamecock defense struck again with Gerald Kilgore taking a pass interception back 45 yards for a touchdown, the seventh non-offensive score for the Gamecocks this season.
Later in the second quarter, Brandon Cisse came up with the defense’s third turnover of the quarter. That led to a 43-yard scoring drive capped by a six-yard touchdown run by Rahsul Faison and a 28-10 halftime lead.
The defense continued to stymie the Wildcats in the second half holding them to 33 total yards, including only four in the fourth quarter. It helped that the offense hogged the ball in the fourth quarter for over twelve minutes.
Meantime, USC quarterback LaNorris Sellers looked like the quarterback who last season ran the ball with reckless abandon while throwing dimes. He finished with 153 passing yards on 11-14 through the air, and he rushed for 81 yards on 14 attempts.
The Gamecocks go into their first off week with a 3-2 overall record and a 1-2 SEC mark. They will play next at LSU on October 11th.
