STRecruiting: What’s going on with MVP RB Jaylen McGill since his decommitment from Rutgers?

Mountain View Prep RB Jaylen McGill (5-10 200) surprised a lot of folks when he announced a commitment to Rutgers January 25th while on a visit to the New Jersey school which included a trip to Madison Square Garden for a basketball game. However, that commitment only stuck for a few weeks. McGill announced a decommitment on February 12th and has opened up his recruiting to all comers.

“Why I committed to Rutgers was because I was satisfying my own self,” McGill said.  “I’m a big believer.  I believe in the Most High.  I was just satisfying my own self.  I had a spiritual awakening.  All I’m doing is following my faith.  God gave me a new life, and I’m blessed to have this new life.  The reason that I decommitted was because it was a spiritual awakening.”

In today’s recruiting climate, a decommitment is often followed by speculation that the prospect is prospecting for a better financial deal through the NIL process. Not the case here, McGill said.

“I only plan on going to the biggest corporations.  I plan on going where the dogs are at because I feel like I’m the best,” McGill said.  “I’m not worried about the money.  I’m not worried about any NIL deal.  The money is going to come.  You ball out, the money comes.  I ain’t worried about the money, the money is worried about me.  I’m more into being developed and being the dog.  I want to be the man with the plan.  I’m going to burst onto the scene.  If you want somebody to come burst onto the scene and instantly impact your program, then holler at JMac.”

Duke hollered at McGill Thursday night and made him an offer. He talked Wednesday with Georgia Tech, which had previously offered.

What’s McGill hearing from USC and Clemson at this point? Both had offered prior to his commitment to Rutgers.

“South Carolina has not hit me up since I decommitted,” McGill said.  “Clemson has not either.  If they want a dog, they will (hit me up).  I don’t want them to waste their time if they don’t want me.  I don’t want them to waste their time or my time.  I just want them to contact me if they want me.”

McGill said he has not scheduled any spring visits or official visits, and he hasn’t figured out a short list. He hopes to do all of that by the end of the month. Some of the other offers he posted prior to his Rutgers commitment included Tennessee, Texas, Florida, Auburn, Florida State, Alabama and Georgia.

McGill has been one of the most productive running backs in the country the past three seasons, first at Broome and last season at MVP. He has 6505 total yards and 91 touchdowns. He has 4827 rushing yards, 1104 receiving yards and 574 return yards.
