#STRecruiting: 2026 SAF J’Zavien Currence shares insight on status of his recruitment

J’Zavien Currence

South Pointe High School in Rock Hill is at it again. In its short history, the school has sent forth dozens of players to college football programs of all levels. Those players would include some of the best players in the modern history of high school football in South Carolina.

Former Stallions include Jadeveon Clowney, Stephon Gilmore, Devonte Holloman and Derion Kendrick. Each was recruited as one of the best players in the country at his position, and in the case of Clowney, as the overall top prospect in the country.

This season South Pointe is loaded once again with SAF J’Zavien Currence (6-3 190) reaching national recruiting status with offers from coast to coast. Currence will be able to write his own ticket to college when he’s ready, but the process is still in the early stages with him.

“I haven’t really set my mind on a top ten or anything yet,” Currence said.  Five schools I know for sure going to be in it are South Carolina, Florida State, Florida, Virginia Tech and Ohio State.”

He also has offers from NC State, Missouri, Boston College, Arkansas, East Carolina, Duke, North Carolina, West Virginia, Georgia, Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Purdue, Oregon, Ole Miss, Syracuse, Alabama, Southern Cal, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Oklahoma and Ohio State.

South Carolina has a strong history at South Pointe. Clowney, Gilmore and Holloman all became Gamecocks. They already have a commitment in their 2026 class from South Pointe offensive lineman Anthony Baxter, and they are doing their best to convince Currence to follow the garnet brick road to Columbia.

“They reach out almost every day,” Currence said.  “Good to hear from Coach (Torrian) Gray, Coach (Shane) Beamer.  The inspirational coach (Derrick Moore), he sends me a text keeping me updated with practice and things like that.  There’s a lot of love coming from them. Coach Gray talks about my work ethic a lot and things like that. I think I’ll fit in more at safety, but he said he’s going to keep me at corner until he says I go to safety.”

Currence visited USC for their spring game and for their recruiting conclave in late July. He also watched a spring practice. What did he take away from that observation?

“How they practice,” he said.  “It was the most competitive I’ve ever seen in a practice.  The coaches were in tune with it.  The players were fired up.  They weren’t trying to get anybody hurt, they were just playing football really fast.”

Besides those early recruiting visits, Currence said there are other factors with the Gamecocks working in their favor with him.

“You know Jadeveon and Stephon Gilmore going there, the yearly seven on seven tournaments that they have, and my brother was in school, I always stayed around,” Currence said.  “You know, state championship was hosted at Williams-Brice before.  I’ve always been around the place.”

And now he has his teammate Baxter, also known as Squirt, in his ear about joining him with the Gamecocks.

“We’ve got second and first block together,” Currence said.  “He’s always telling me, whenever I’m ready.  Whenever I’m ready.  I’m not as focused on it right now. I’m trying to win state.”

Clemson offered Currence on June 1st, but the Tigers have some ground to make up if they want to get more of his attention. He said he has been getting messages from the Tigers and has been invited for a game this season.

“They’re just a little late,” he said.  “It’s not that I’m counting them out, it’s just I haven’t been there as much as I have South Carolina.”

Currence said he actually grew up a Florida fan, and he plans to attend the Miami at Florida game a week from Saturday. He does not have any other game visits planned at this point though he acknowledged he can get to a USC game on any weekend.

Currence said he would like to make his decision between the end of his junior season and the start of his senior season.

Per MaxPreps stats, in 17 varsity games Currence has ttotaled 103 tackles with five interceptons.
