The past two seasons the South Carolina offense was bult around the talented right arm of Spencer Rattler. That paid off to the tune of 6200 yards and 37 touchdowns. Shane Beamer and Dowell Loggains know replacing that kind of production won’t be easy.
Rattler was a pro-style, drop back quarterback. He wasn’t called on to run often and when he did, it was usually to get away from the pass rush. He rushed for 150 yards total in his two seasons.
Now, the plan for the Gamecocks is to go to more of a dual threat look at quarterback. That’s what they have in expected starter LaNorris Sellers and projected backup Robby Ashford. Beamer and Loggains can now dial up plays at quarterback to take advantage of legs as well as arms.
Coming off a standout senir season at South Florence in which he passed for 3000 yards and 45 touchdowns and rushed for 1338 yards and 17 touchdowns, Sellers played in only four games last season in mop ujp duty behind Rattler. The offense is expected to be in his hands when the season opens August 31st and Sellers believes he will be up to the challenge.
Sellers talked with SportsTalk recently at the USC media day.
