South defense too strong for the North in 28-8 Touchstone Energy Bowl victory (AUDIO)

Carmelo McDaniel breaks loose on a 64-yard touchdown run (Travis Bell/Sideline Carolina)

MYRTLE BEACH: The North scored a touchdown on the opening possession of the 76th annual Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl Saturday afternoon at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, and that would be their only trip to the end zone all day. The South responded with a touchdown on their first possession and added three more in pulling away to a 28-8 win.

The South defense proved to be too much for the North offense allowing just 138 yards. The South, on the other hand, exhibited a strong running game with 215 yards on the ground. Carmelo McDaniel of Hartsville led the way with 82 yards and a touchdown. Jaden Allen-Hendrix of Irmo added another 61 rushing yards.

McDaniel broke off a 64-yard run for the South to tie the game midway through the first quarter. South quarterback McKendrie Douglas of Hartsville later threw a six-yard touchdown pass to Zion Dobson of Hampton County and also scored on a seven-yard run for a 21-8 lead. Dakota Jordan of Dutch Fork capped the scoring with a 26-yard scoop and score in the fourth quarter.

The win is the fourth in the last five games in the series by the South. The North leads the series 40-32-2.
