USC head baseball coach Mark Kingston made a quick call to the bullpen earlier this week to replace departing pitching coach Justin Parker. On Monday, it was confirmed that Parker was leaving USC to accept the same role at SEC rival Mississippi State. Apparently, Kingston already had his next move in mind.

On Tuesday, the Gamecocks officially announced the hiring of Matt Williams as their new pitching coach. Williams, a Lancaster native and former player for Spartanburg Methodist and Limestone, just completed his fourth season at Liberty University. Under Williams tutelage, 35 pitchers have signed professional contracts, and five of his former players have gone on to pitch in the majors. Four of his pitchers were named conference “Pitcher of the Year,” with several others earning All-Conference honors.

Williams had a chance to meet with the media via Zoom on Wednesday to discuss his return to the Palmetto State and what he hopes to accomplish with the Gamecocks.
