USC completed a sweep of Penn Sunday afternoon, but none of the three victories came easily. The Gamecocks needed a pair of 8th inning home runs Sunday afternoon for a come-from-behind 6-5 win. They won on Saturday 1-0 and took the series opener Friday 7-4.
Penn took a 5-4 lead in the top of the eighth on a solo home run. The Gamecocks countered with two solo shots in the bottom of the inning giving them a nation’s best 26 home runs on the season. Gavin Casas tied the game with his homer and Will McGillis followed with his blast that turned out to be the game winner.
Chris Veach pitched a perfect 9th for his second save on the season. Cade Austin recorded the final out in the top of the 8th to earn his first win. Jack Mahoney started for the Gamecocks and allowed four runs and five hits over 5.1 innings. Eli Jerzembeck followed and gave up one run on four hits.
Braylen Wimmer also homered for the Gamecocks who only had seven hits, but they drew 11 walks and were hit by pitches seven times. They ended up leaving 19 on base.
The Gamecocks are 8-0 and will host North Carolina A&M Tuesday afternoon.
