CCU Press Release on UVA Game Cancellation

Coastal Carolina head football coach Jamey Chadwell says trying to prepare for this week’s game against Virginia was extremely difficult in the wake of Sunday night’s shooting on the UVA campus that claimed the lives of three current football players.

“Were we locked in during practice? No, we weren’t,” Chadwell said on Wednesday during his weekly press conference. “We’re doing our job, but our hearts and minds were in other places.”

The University of Virginia announced on Wednesday morning that Saturday’s game against the Chanticleers had been canceled as the university tries to make sense of Sunday’s tragedy. Chadwell said that he and his program are 100% behind the decision to cancel the game and believe that UVA head coach Tony Elliott will handle the aftermath as well as could be expected.

“He’s leading young men through something nobody wants to live through. He’ll do a tremendous job because he’s a man of faith.”

The Chanticleers are scheduled to wrap-up the regular season next Saturday, November 26th, at James Madison.
