Things couldn’t have gone better for one of Clemson’s top prospects over the weekend. 2028 quarterback Trace Hawkins (6-0, 180) of Calhoun, GA, made his first of two spring visits to campus for last month’s Orange and White game, and his impression of Clemson continues to grow.
Hawkins was treated to the full Clemson experience, from the spring game to a tour of campus and a visit with the coaching staff. And his biggest takeaway from the weekend was the excitement surrounding the program at this moment.
“The energy around the program really stood out,” Hawkins said. “I liked seeing how detailed everything was. The campus was also impressive, and the atmosphere felt like a place where I could see myself developing.”
Hawkins can see himself developing under offensive coordinator Chad Morris, with Saturday serving as a unique opportunity to get a look at Clemson’s offense under Morris’ direction. Hawkins appreciates the responsibility quarterbacks must assume in Morris’ system and feels what he saw on Saturday fits his skill set.
“It was exciting to see the offense up close again,” he explained. “It’s fast-paced and puts a lot on the quarterback, which I like. They spread the field and give playmakers chances to make plays. I think it’s an offense that fits my skill set.”
One unique facet of Clemson’s spring game was witnessing a true quarterback competition, especially with freshman Tait Reynolds getting a shot at the starting gig. Hawkins is aiming to come in and compete early, so the idea of getting a chance from the second he’s on campus is intriguing.
“Yeah, seeing Tait Reynolds compete early shows they give everyone a chance,” Hawkins discussed. “That makes it more interesting because you know you can come in and compete.”
Outside of Clemson, Duke, Florida, and Auburn, have impressed Hawkins so far in his recruiting process, and they have offered, along with Indiana, Georgia, SMU, and Georgia Tech.
Clemson will begin offering 2028 prospects this summer, and an offer from the Tigers would certainly be held in high regard.
“I hope I’m one of the guys they offer,” he said. “It would mean a lot because it’s a big program. Right now, Clemson is definitely high on my list.”
Last season Hawkins passed for 2442 yards with 24 touchdowns and three interceptions.
