The USC football team went through their first full scrimmage of pre-season camp Saturday afternoon at Williams-Brice Stadium. Coach Shane Beamer said afterwards he was generally pleased with what he saw. Both sides had their moments, but he pointed out there’s still plenty of work to do and plenty of competition for starting jobs across the board.
Beamer said quarterback Spencer Rattler flashed at times and took the team down the field against the number one defense on the opening possession, only to have things stall out in the red zone. Beamer said the offense needed to play better when down in scoring position. He also had praise for quarterback Luke Doty who he said had come a long way from where he was last season.
Some notable players were held out of the scrimmage due to what Beamer indicated were minor ailments. Among those players were Marshawn Lloyd, Christian Beal-Smith, Josh Vann and Sherrod Greene. There were no new significant injuries to report from the scrimmage according to Beamer.
The Gamecocks will take Sunday off and practice every day next week culminating in another scrimmage next Saturday.
