South Carolina’s ninth-inning rally ended a run short as the Gamecocks fell to UNC Greensboro 5-4 at Founders Park, Saturday. USC entered the final frame down 5-1. The Gamecocks loaded the bases twice and scored three runs before Josiah Sightler’s flyout ended the threat.
JUCO transfer James Hicks got the start and gave up four earned runs in 4.1 innings of work. Hicks didn’t get much support in his first start as the Gamecocks scored just one run over the first eight innings. After plating nine runs in the season opener, South Carolina (1-1) didn’t register an extra-base hit in Game 2.
Braylen Wimmer (3-4, run), Andrew Eyster (3-5, RBI) and Michael Braswell (2 RBI’s) did most of the damage offensively. The Gamecocks will try to take the series with a win in Game 3 at 1:30 p.m., Sunday.
