USC, which is ranked as high as 5th in the national polls this week, looked every bit a national power Tuesday night, showing power at the plate and power arms on the mound in a 9-0 shutout of Charleston Southern. David Mendham had a two run homer in the third, and Josiah Sightler a grand slam in the fourth, as the Gamecocks built an 8-0 lead thru four innings.
On the mound, freshman Jack Mahoney pitched the first five innings. He allowed one hit, struck out seven and walked one. Jackson Phipps, Wesley Sweatt, Julian Bosnic and Magdiel Cotto finished up allowing three singles over the final four frames. They struck out four and didn’t walk a batter. Mahone took the win to improve to 2-0.
The win is the Gamecocks’ 75th all-time in the series with the Bucs. USC has won three in a row and is 22-9 heading to LSU for a series that begins Thursday night.
