One more shot. That’s all the USC offense wanted in the final 1:24 of Saturday’s season opening 31-27 loss to Tennessee at Williams-Brice Stadium. The Gamecock defense had just forced a punt that rolled to the Gamecock 18. But as the ball was bouncing around, it hit hit the lower leg of USC’s Cam Smith and was recovered by Tennessee. Game over. A bitter way for the Gamecocks to open the season considering they overcame a 21-7 deficit early in the third quarter to be in position for a potential drive to win the game.
The loss marred the Gamecock debut of quarterback Collin Hill who passed for 290 yards and 1 touchdown, and he rushed for 1 score. But he did throw a pick six in the first half. And he was a little high on a 2nd and 15 pass to Nick Muse at the UT 31 on the Gamecocks’ final possession. A completion there and the Gamecocks possibly take it in for a go ahead touchdown instead of settling for a 45 yard Parker White field goal.
