#STRecruiting: #Gamecocks holding the edge with Georgia defensive lineman

DT Makius Scott (6-4 290) of Gainesville, GA has made a couple of visits to USC, the last one in late March, and the Gamecocks have gone after him with a lot of effort. They have caught his attention and according to his coach, at this point, will be the team to beat for him.

“South Carolina kind of jumped on him really early,” said Gainesville coach Heath Webb, a former Presbyterian College receiver. “They probably see  him as a defensive tackle.  He’s athletic enough at the high school level for us to play defensive end but at the college level will be a defensive tackle.”

USC was one of Scott’s first offers. He also has offers from Louisville, Wake Forest, Memphis, East Carolina, Cincinnati, Liberty, Austin Peay Troy and Western Kentucky.

“He loves them and to their credit they have done an awesome job of recruiting him,” Webb said of USC. “Coach Muschamp has been on campus and talked with him personally.  They’ve kind of  pegged him as a priority.  They’ve given him first class treatment and he seems to have connected pretty well to the staff over there.”

And all of that has added up to the Gamecocks holding the edge for Scott right now according to his coach.

“I think that’s fair to say,” Webb said. “He’s not in any hurry.  He’s a really humble, grounded, down to earth kid who doesn’t have to rush into any decision.  Just kind of sit back and see how it goes and let this thing play out.  But, it’s safe to say they are the favorite at this point.”

But the coach isn’t expecting a final decision any time soon.

“Right now I think he’s kind of sitting still thru spring practice because it will be a who’s who of college football that will show up during our spring practice to watch him play,” he said. “Kind of evaluate things at that point and time and see what his best options are, who is still interested in that point and time or who new shows up that he might have an interest in as well.”

The Gamecocks have five commitments for their 2020 class but none on the defensive side.
