STRecruiting Notebook: The state’s top basketball prospect for 2027 has a new hoops home; Former USC pitcher returning to native state; Some football notes as well

6-7 Josh Leonard of Wilson is transferring to IMG Academy, according to Sam Kayser of LeagueRDY. He is a top USC and Clemson target and is considered the top prospect in South Carolina for the 2027 class. Leonard averaged 22 points and 13 rebounds per game last season for the Tigers. He’s the two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in South Carolina. Michigan and Tennessee are two others he’s expressed interest in.

Former South Carolina RHP Alex Philpott is headed to Florida State. He’s also pitched for Florida. This season for the Gamecocks, he went 0-5 with three saves and a 6.51 ERA in 16 appearances. With Philpott making his decision, 23 of the 24 former Gamecocks in the portal have made decisions, and the other, Hudson Lee, may not continue with his career.

One-time Clemson target LB Roman Igwebuike will announce on Saturday. The Tigers are not in the running for his commitment. Indiana, Missouri, Notre Dame, and Tennessee are the other schools listed as possible choices.

Clemson and South Carolina target 2028 OL Joey Fleming of Huntsville, AL was offered by Nebraska.

2028 QB Trace Hawkins of Calhoun, GA, told Chad Simmons of Rivals he currently has Clemson and LSU as his top two schools. Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and Virginia Tech are also on his list.

Clemson and South Carolina target 2028 OL Samuel Bailey was offered by Nebraska, his 30th offer.

South Carolina target 2028 WR Madoxx Davis (6-0 187) of Cartersville, GA, was offered by Michigan. Davis was offered by USC receivers coach Mike Furrey while in for a game visit last October. He also has offers from Miami, Arizona State, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, LSU, Duke, Florida State, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Indiana, Georgia Tech, Missouri, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and others.
