Game Summary

  • USC Upstate saw its stay in the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional come to an end with a 12-1 loss to Oklahoma State, Sunday.
  • The Spartans couldn’t get anything going against Cowboys pitching, going just 5 for 32 (.156) with no extra-base hits. Oklahoma State starter Hudson Barrett (W, 6-1) had his good stuff going, fanning ten and allowing just two hits in seven shutout innings.
  • Upstate starter Max Eichenberger retired Oklahoma State in order in the first but the Cowboys got a two-run homer in the second and the wheels came off in a seven-run third. The first runs came in on a three-run blast from Avery Ortiz to make it 5-0. Eichenberger (L, 1-3) couldn’t regroup and allowed the next three batters reach before he was lifted in favor of Andrew Kummer. Kummer couldn’t douse the flames, however, surrendering a three-run homer on the first pitch to Remo Indomenico.
  • Oklahoma State’s Campbell Smithwick went deep again in the fourth, his second homer of the game, to make it 10-0. Indomenico matched Smithwick with his second long ball in the seventh. Terrance Bowen made it back-to-back with a solo homer behind Indomenico to cap the scoring for the Pokes.
  • USC Upstate scored its lone run of the game when Trey Bentley (2-4) doubled home Johnny Sweeney with two outs in the ninth.
  • Oklahoma State stays alive in the Tuscaloosa Regional and will face host Alabama later Sunday at 8 p.m.
  • The Spartans accomplished a program first in Tuscaloosa by winning the program’s first tournament game, Friday. USC Upstate (34-30) claimed both the Big South regular season crown and Big South tournament championship for the second consecutive season.
