Notre Dame 8 – Clemson 7 Game Summary
- Clemson’s bullpen couldn’t hold a late lead, Saturday, giving up two runs in the eighth and another in the ninth as Notre Dame walked off the Tigers 8-7 in South Bend, Ind.
- The Irish jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as the first four batters reached base against Clemson starter Michael Sharman (2.0 IP, 4 ER).
- Clemson got on the board when Jacob Jarrell (2-5, 2b, HR) led off the second inning with a homer to left.
- Notre Dame answered Jarrell’s long ball with one from Drew Berkland in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead.
- The Tigers plated a run in the third on Tryston McCladdie’s infield single but missed a chance to add more when Ty Dalley grounded out with the basses loaded.
- Clemson took its first lead with a three-run fifth. Jack Crighton’s (3-4, 2 RBI) two-run double knotted the game up at 4-4 before Luke Gaffney (1-2, 3 RBI) put the Tigers in front with a sacrifice fly.
- After Notre Dame tied it with a run in the sixth, Clemson retook the lead in the seventh on Gaffney’s two-run single.
- The Tigers bullpen didn’t hold up, however, as the Irish got a two-run homer in the eighth off Clemson righthander Danny Nelson (L, 0-1) to tie the game 7-7. After Clemson went down in order in the top of the ninth, Notre Dame loaded the bases against Nelson in the home half on a pair of singles and an intentional walk. Clemson (18-6, 1-4) opted to issue an intentional walk to set up a potential double play, but the Tigers couldn’t execute on a ground ball to short and the Irish walked it off to secure the series.
- A day after producing just four singles, Clemson’s lineup came back to life with a dozen hits and seven runs.
- The Tigers will look to salvage a game in the series at 1 p.m., Sunday.
