Another rough ride on Tobacco Road for Clemson as Tigers fall at Wake Forest 85-77 Wednesday night for third straight loss (AUDIO)

Mekhi Mason and his Wake Forest teammates shot lights out in the first half (Wake Forest X)
  • Wake Forest shot nearly 67% in the first half, the best first-half shooting performance ever against a Brad Brownell Clemson team, with Myles Colvin doing the most damage with a 5-5 shooting performance, including 4-4 from three-point range.
  • Jake Wahlin countered for Clemson, going 4-5 in the half, with a three-pointer, for nine points.
  • The Demon Deacons led 8-7 about four minutes in, then went on an 18-3 run for a 16-point advantage with 8:53 left in the half. The Deacons made eight of ten field goals during that stretch, including a pair of threes, while the Tigers were only one for eight from the floor.
  • Clemson pulled to within nine points with 5:03 left in the half, then the Deacons started finding the range again, going on an 11-0 run for a 45-25 lead with 2:27 left in the half.
  • Clemson scored the final seven points of the half to make it 45-32 at the break.
  • The Tigers opened the second half in a positive way with Carter Welling and Wahlin combining for three layups, and the score stood at 45-38 after two minutes. About two minutes later, Nick Davidson cashed in a three-pointer to get Clemson to within five points. That, however, was as close as the Tigers would get.
  • Clemson just could not get enough stops defensively the rest of the way to have a chance to catch the Demon Deacons. After missing their first four jumpers to open the second half, the Deacons made nine of their next 9 of 16 from the floor, including three triples.
  • The Deacons eventually got the lead back up to 14 points with 5:07 to play. The Tigers got to within six points with 2:23 remaining, but four straight points by Sebastian Atkins slammed the door on any late Clemson rally.
  • The Deacons, who went 10-22 from three, finished with a 55% shooting night, their high mark of the season in ACC games, and the best shooting performance against Clemson this season. Clemson shot 46%, and was 8-26 from three.
  • Wahlin led Clemson with a career high of 17 points. Welling and Ace Buckner had 13 points each. Welling led the Tigers on the boards with seven rebounds.
  • It was another poor offensive night for Dillon Hunter, who has been stuck in a miserable slump. He took only three shots, making one, which was a three-pointer, to finish with three points. In his last six games, Hunter is 5-24 from the floor and has scored just 15 points.
  • Juke Harris led five Deacons in double figures with 20 points. He also led his team with seven rebounds.
  • Clemson has lost back-to-back games on Tobacco Road after losing at Duke last Saturday, and the Tigers are on a season-high three-game losing streak.
  • The Tigers are 20-7 overall and 10-4 in the ACC and will host Florida State Saturday afternoon.
  • Wake has won three in a row and is now 14-12 and 5-8. The Deacons will play at Virginia Tech on Saturday.
