Recaps of Saturday’s FCS/D2 Games: Newberry wins the SAC, Benedict & North Greenville to play for titles

Newberry is back on top in the South Atlantic Conference (Newberry Athletics)

Newberry 28-Carson-Newman 21

Newberry thwarted Carson-Newman on the last play of the game to win the 2025 South Atlantic Conference Championship and secure a bid to the 2025 NCAA Division 2 playoffs 28-21 before a sold-out crowd at Setzler Field. Carson-Newman had the ball on fourth down from the Newberry 12-yard line with four seconds left, but Santory Jones intercepted a pass in the corner of the end zone to seal Newberry’s seventh consecutive victory and third South Atlantic Conference title in the last five seasons. The Wolves also won their fifth game on their final offensive possession when true freshman, back-up H-back Keshon Washington made a finger-tip catch of a Reed Charpia pass caught and rumbled 70 yards for a touchdown to give the Wolves a 28-21 lead with 1:48 remaining in the game. Carson-Newman then drove 63 yards on 13 plays to get the ball to the Newberry 13-yard line, but the Jones stopped a pass play for just one yard, followed by two incomplete passes, one that fell short on a quarterback pressure by Jonathan Sexton that set up the final play. Charpia had another standout game, completing 21 of 29 passes with three touchdowns and no interceptions for 267 yards. He now has 2,682 yards passing on the season with 23 touchdowns, just one interception and has completed 70 percent of his passes. His 227 completions are the second-best, his 2,682 yards passing are the third best and his 23 touchdowns are tied for the fourth best single season total in Newberry history, while accomplishing it in just 10 games. Newberry completed the regular season with a 9-1 record, 8-1 in the South Atlantic Conference and has a bye-week before the NCAA Division 2 playoff bracket is announced on Sunday, November 23rd.

Allen 53-Edward Waters 31

In front of a roaring Homecoming crowd, the Yellow Jackets delivered their most complete performance of the season. Quarterback Jamir Dismukes compete 23-of-32 passes for 284 yards and 2 touchdowns, while also rushing 17 times for 85 yards and another score. Defensively, Allen’s swarm lived up to the Yellow Jacket name. Amarie Fleming led the charge with 6 tackles (3 for loss), 3 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. The Yellow Jackets are 5-5 overall and 5-3 in the SIAC and will have a postseason game.

Catawba 44-Anderson 20

Wilson Edwards made his second straight start, accounting for 213 passing yard and a touchdown while addition 52 yards on the ground as well. Trojans finish the season 5-6 overall and 3-6 in the SAC.

Benedict 16-Savannah State 13 (2 OT)

Triston Morgan scored on a 25-yard run, breaking multiple tackles along the way, to score the winning touchdown as the Benedict College Tigers secured a trip to next week’s SIAC championship. In the second overtime period, Savannah State threw a pair of incomplete passes and Terry had another tackle for loss. They kicked a 44-yard field goal to take a 13-10 lead. On Benedict’s possession, Morgan took the handoff on first down and bounced off tacklers as he made his way into the end zone for the game-winning score. Benedict will be going for its third SIAC championship in the past four years, and the first under second-year coach Ron Dickerson Jr. Next week’s title game will be a rematch of the Oct. 25 contest in Columbia, with the Golden Rams taking a 31-3 victory.

Ole Miss 49-The Citadel 0

Offensively, The Citadel racked up just 106 yards on 50 plays. Quentin Hayes paced the usual one-two punch at QB with 35 rushing yards on 12 carries; Cobey Thompkins added 23 yards through the air on a 3-of-6 day passing. For the running back corps, Beau Herrington finished led the way with 53 yards on the ground behind just seven carries, notably breaking off a 41-yard gash early in the third quarter Defensively, Temarcus Elam set the tone with a team-best 10 tackles, including eight unassisted; Darryle Ware and J’hari Mosley contributed seven apiece as well while Mikey Rosa logged a grand total six The Bulldogs are 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the Southern Conference and will host Wofford Saturday.

Barton 37-Erskine 7

Ryan Killmer totaled 130 yards and a touchdown to lead the Fleet’s passing attack. Logan Coldren was Erskine’s leading rusher, running for 58 yards, including a long of 21 yards, but the Fleet were outgained on the ground, 210 to 72. Taylor Rhodes led the Fleet in receptions (5) and receiving yards (76), while Rodshaun “Tonk” Dorsey caught an 18-yard touchdown for his fifth score of the season. Skyler Vega posted a team-high 10 tackles as well as one of Erskine’s two tackles for loss. Erskine is 1-9 and 1-5 in Conference Carolinas and will play at Allen Saturday.

UT Chattanooga 45-Furman 28

Battle Alberson passed for 277 yards and four touchdowns to lead Chattanooga. Making his first career start, Alberson, a freshman, completed 15 of 22 passes and touchdown strikes covering 25, 66, 47, and 25 yards for the Mocs. With the scored tied 21-21 at halftime, the Mocs grabbed the lead for good when defensive tackle Ky Tayo dropped off in coverage and intercepted a pass by Paladin quarterback Trey Hedden and returned it 51 yards for a touchdown to put Chattanooga ahead, 28-21. Chattanooga finished the contest with 529-368 advantage in total offense, including 252 rushing yards. Hedden connected on 19-of-27 passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted twice and suffered two sacks. Paladins are 5-5 and 3-4 in the SOCON and will host VMI Saturday.

North Greenville 35-Shorter 33

North Greenville overcame a slow start and a late Shorter comeback on Saturday to finish the regular season undefeated in Conference Carolinas play. The Trailblazers fell behind 13 – 0 in the first quarter after turning the ball over on their first two drives. North Greenville responded with three touchdowns in the second quarter to take a halftime lead. Dylan Ramirez threw for three touchdowns in the second frame. North Greenville led  35 – 20, but Shorter scored twice in the final six minutes. Shorter’s attempted two-point conversion fell short on its final score to keep NGU in front with 3:59 left in the game. The Trailblazers ran the clock down to a minute before punting back to Shorter. The Hawks drove to the NGU 44–yard line, but a 61–yard field goal attempt would come up well short as NGU escaped with the win. Ramirez finished with 375 yards on 29 completions and four touchdowns in the winning effort. He also ran for another 68 yards. North Greenville is 6-4 and 6-0 in Conference Carolina and will host UNC Pembroke Saturday in the conference championship game.

Davidson 14-Presbyterian 13

PC was plagued by first-half mistakes in a defensive tug-of-war, failing three fourth-down attempts along with a pivotal missed extra point, an interception, and a fumble. The Blue Hose played without injured quarterback Collin Hurst. Down a point in the final minutes, Presbyterian’s defense ensured that the lead would stay at just one, making Davidson punt for the fifth time with 3:17 to go. That punt was downed at the eight-yard line. On the third play of the drive, the Wildcats intercepted Ty Englehart, and from there, they were able to hold the ball for the remaining two minutes and six seconds, icing the game on a 4th-and-1 plunge. The Blue Hose rushed for 228 yards and passed for 69. They are 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the Pioneer League. They will play at St. Thomas on Saturday.

SC State 42-Howard 12

The Bulldogs are undefeated at home during the Chennis Berry era. SC State improves to 7-3 overall, 3-0 in the MEAC. Quarterback William Atkins IV led the Bulldogs’ offense, completing 15 of 23 passes for 213 yards and one touchdown. The ground game complemented the air attack. The Bulldogs closed the day with 116 rushing yards on 31 attempts. State will hit the national stage with a pivotal Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) showdown with NC Central on Friday on ESPN2 in Durham, NC. Kickoff is 5:30 p.m.

Wofford 52-VMI 10

The offense scored a season-high 52 points, while the defense came up with three turnovers and allowed a season-low ten points in the victory. J.T. Fayard was 22-of-33 passing for 365 yards and five touchdowns. Ivory Aikens had four catches and three touchdowns, while Isaiah Scott had five catches for 113 yards. Wofford had 507 total yards on offense, with 365 passing yards. VMI had 228 total yards, with 140 of those passing yards. The Terriers are 4-6 overall and 3-3 in the SOCON and will play at The Citadel on Saturday.
