Evidently, the NCAA has a flair for the dramatic. Waiting until the start of “Game Week” for the Gamecocks, the governing body has finally approved a waiver for Utah State transfer running back Rahsul Faison to play this season. The waiver grants Faison, who transferred to USC over the holidays, a seventh year of collegiate eligibility. The news was first reported by Matt Zenith of CBS Sports.
Gamecock social media didn’t waste any time in alerting USC fans about the news either.
The former Utah State Aggie announced his decision to transfer to the South Carolina Gamecocks on Christmas Eve. Faison had been awaiting another decision since that time from the NCAA, one that would determine his playing status in 2025.
“We’ve given them everything they needed. Back in January, they asked for more. We gave them what they needed. They asked for more. We gave them what they needed,” a frustrated coach Shane Beamer said in May. “We’ve been in contact with other schools he was at to get stuff from them that they needed.”
Shortly after he said that, attorney Darren Heitner retained Faison as a client, although no legal action was taken. Heitner said then that, “I was retained by Rahsul today because the NCAA was slow to respond to the pending waiver, and I have already achieved success in receiving a response. I expect we will all know the NCAA’s determination shortly.”
Faison spent the 2020 season at Lackawanna Community College but did not play. Nor did he play in 2021 when he was enrolled at Marshall. In 2022, Faison returned to the JUCO ranks at Snow College in Utah. After spending his junior and senior seasons with Utah State, Faison is taking his talents to the SEC.
