Clemson coach Dabo Swinney addresses the media prior to the start of spring practice Friday

Key comments from Dabo Swinney on spring practice

  • They’ve got a lot of work to do, it’s part of the process, have to be very intentional in everything because it all matters.
  • Leadership and chemistry and team are the three big things with him in the spring.
  • Goals in the spring include installing offense, defense and kicking game, and they have to develop their team. Everyone is on campus minus three guys.
  • Spring is a huge time for fundamentals and techniques and developing game day habits.
  • The new transfers have acclimated to their new surroundings well, as have the high school recruits who arrived in January.
  • Freshman RB Gideon Davidson is special, had a 40-inch vertical, excited to have him but he’s got learn how to play at this level.
  • Tight end Marcus Dixon will transition to defensive end, Misun Kelley will start out at receiver but could be looked at in the secondary.
  • Needs to get the younger, inexperienced players a lot of work this spring learning to play football because they don’t get exhibition games, no need to expose the proven vets to a lot of contact.
  • Practically everybody is back from last season, they got close to the top of the mountain but didn’t get there, added some “really cool pieces” to the roster, excited to see what they can put together.
  • Not concerned with offseason talk regarding playoff formats, not even talk of ACC with two AQ compared to 4 for SEC & Big 10, pointed out they’ve been to playoffs 7 of last 10 seasons so he likes their chances regardless of the format.
