Florida State 8 – Clemson 4 Game Summary

  • Florida State took the upper hand early on and fended off a late rally in a 8-4 victory over Clemson at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, Friday.
  • The Seminoles plated a first-inning run against Clemson starter Dane Moehler (L, 0-2) on an RBI single to left. Moehler got through the second unscathed before handing the baton to left hander Justin LeGuernic. FSU greeted LeGuernic rudely, scoring three runs on four hits and a sacrifice fly.
  • Florida State added a two-run homer in the fourth and a solo homer in the fifth, both off of LeGuernic, to extend the lead to 7-2. LeGuernic was saddled with six earned runs in three innings.
  • Clemson, meanwhile, was fighting an uphill battle against FSU starter Wes Mendes (W, 9-3, 10 Ks), one of the top left handed pitchers in the conference. Mendes, fresh off a complete game victory over Pittsburgh, held the Tigers to three runs on five hits in six innings. Clemson was able to scratch out a fourth run in the seventh on an RBI single from Jacob Jarrell, trimming the deficit to three.
  • FSU kept the pressure on the Clemson’s staff, plating an insurance run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly to make it 8-4.
  • The Tigers made the Noles sweat it out late, loading the bases in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate. FSU brought in Payton Manca, the third Seminoles’ pitcher of the inning, to face Tryston McCladdie. McCladdie worked the count to 3-1 before driving a ball deep to right-center field that came up just short of the fence for a game-ending fly out.
  • Jacob Jarrell (2-3, 2 RBI) had the best offensive day for Clemson, rapping out a pair of run-scoring singles. Jarren Purify and Tyler Lichtenberger each doubled, accounting for the Tigers’ only extra-base hits. Jack Crighton also had a pair of hits, including an RBI single in the sixth.
  • Clemson (29-21, 8-17) will look to even the series when the Tigers take the field against the Seminoles (35-14, 16-9) for Game 2 at 6 p.m., Saturday.
