Dutch Fork LB Josh Smith (6-2 230) decommitted from Coastal Carolina on Monday after committing to the Chanticleers following a summer official visit. He did not make this move without having other opportunities.
“I’m really just looking at those three options…NC State, Carolina and Ole Miss,” Smith said. “I’m in the process of setting up my OV for South Carolina. I’m not sure about Ole Miss, but those three schools are in my mind right now.”
Smith took an official visit to NC State last weekend. He visited USC for the Akron game and is headed back this Saturday for the Ole Miss game. He and linebackers coach Clayton White are talking about an official visit.
“The relationship just started picking up recently,” Smith said. “I’ve been going to their camps and things like that, and they’ve been keeping up with me. The relationship just started to build recently. I’ve been to South Carolina games and each time I get to talk to more and more people on the staff and get to know people there. Obviously, I know a decent amount of the commits there because they are all from the state and I’ve played games with them.”
Smith just moved to linebacker this season after coming up as a defensive end, and he’s taken to the position very well with an estimated 40 tackles and three sacks. His quick adaptation to the position has impressed White.
“The fact that I’ve just started playing linebacker and I’m doing pretty well at the position, so he knows that they can only develop me further into a better player at linebacker,” Smith said. “I like the defense a lot. They run like a 4-2, linebackers play out in space, and it looks like they play a lot of man coverage on the back, which is pretty similar to what I do now in high school.”
Smith said he would like to make his decisoin by mid-November before his Dutch Fork team gets too deep into their playoff run.
