South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer is set to open his fourth pre-season camp in Columbia Friday morning. The Gamecocks missed a bowl game last season for the first time in Beamer’s three seasons, and that 5-7 record did not sit well with anyone inside their operation. In the offseason Beamer attempted to address all areas of the roster through high school and portal recruiting, and 35 scholarship newcomers have joined the veterans.
The Gamecocks will scrimmage twice during camp at Williams-Brice Stadium, on August 10th and August 17th, and they will open their season at home August 31st against Old Dominion.
Beamer Notebook:
- Love this group, they have worked hard and are ready to get back to work, he’s never been more excited about starting a season and that’s because of the people on the team.
- Need to ID a kicker, and there are questions to be answered at every position as they sort through the depth and determine starters and backups.
- No question they’ve gotten stronger during the offseason, feels like they’ve taken a huge step from a leadership standpoint, willing to call guys out.
- They have tweaked some things for practice hoping they will help from a health standpoint, coming out of meetings, doing a little bit more of a warm up before the players get into more up-tempo work.
- All the respect in the world for Robby Ashford coming in to compete with Sellers, he didn’t want anything handed to him.
- Confirms DT Jerome Simmons won’t be with the team this fall, hopes to have him in the program for 2025, no other changes on the roster to report.
- Nyck Harbor needs to continue to work, he’s been putting in the effort even while involved with track, tomorrow will be first time Harbor and new receivers coach Mike Furrey will have worked together on the field.
