College of Charleston head baseball coach Chad Holbrook has never had a losing season during his time in the “Holy City.” As a matter of fact, two years ago, the Cougars were 37-20 with wins over #2 Texas and Clemson, a series victory versus East Carolina, and a stellar 19-5 conference mark. However, the season ended with a disappointing 1-2 showing in the CAA tournament and no NCAA postseason.
This year, the Cougars are once again in a position to reach the NCAA tournament. They are locked in a battle with UNCW for the top spot in the Coastal Athletic Association, heading into a weekend series with Northeastern. Their offense is led by outfielder Avery Neaves, the reigning CAA “Player of the Week.” The graduate transfer was 8-for-8 this past week with three doubles, two triples, and three home runs. He scored eight runs and drove in five in two victories over Towson.
Even with all of that on the resume, Holbrook is cautious when discussing his team’s postseason chances.
“I’m hearing from D1 baseball, they think we’re (CAA) going to get two bids this year,” Holbrook said. “You never know. I think it’s good that we might get two teams. But we’ve got to play well down the stretch. At this level, it is what it is. You can only play the games that are on your schedule and do the best you can. You really don’t have much control over RPI and that sort of thing.”
Holbrook was a guest on SportsTalk Wednesday night to discuss his team and their current situation regarding the postseason. He also elaborated further on the week that Neaves had while stating what it would mean for the Cougars to earn an NCAA tournament bid.
