USC basketball fans were disappointed this past August when Lexington guard Cam Scott chose Texas over the hometown Gamecocks. However, when given a second bite at the apple, Lamont Paris got his man.
Last weekend the 6-6 guard asked for a release from his national letter of intent with Texas after head coach Rodney Terry brought in three players via the transfer portal.
The Lexington standout indicated on social media earlier this week that he would be “looking to stay closer to my loved ones” as he pursues his college basketball career, and he announced his pledge to USC on Wednesday morning.
“Being able to be from here, the state of South Carolina, and representing your state on the front of the jersey as well as representing your own stuff on the back, this is a big honor for everybody,” Scott told the media at his official announcement at his high school. “You can tell by how hard they play, and I just want to go contribute that.”
Scott is a two-time Gatorade Player of the Year in South Carolina. He scored a school record 2475 points in his career, and last season he averaged over 22 points and six rebounds per game in leading the Wildcats to their first state championship since 2000.
“I think I’ll just bring a nice little burst of energy,” Scott said. “I love to play basketball. Just being on the court with another group of guys that love to play basketball, we’ll mesh really well being able to get up and down the court and just being able to complement everybody’s game.”
He originally chose Texas over the Gamecocks and other finalists, Auburn, Alabama, Oregon, and Ole Miss.
Scott gives the Gamecocks three commitments for the 2024 class including 6-9 Okku Federiko of Finland and 6-5 Trent Noah of Baxter, KY.
