Christ Church goes back-to-back in 1A Boys; Lake View takes 1A Girls title

Christ Church has gone back-to-back in 1A (SCHSL)

FLORENCE CENTER: Christ Church Episcopal laid claim to its second consecutive 1A Boys State Championship with a convincing 53-32 victory over Bethune-Bowman, Saturday.

It’s the third title in four years for the Cavaliers, who were led in scoring by swingman Adam Brown. Brown played just 18 minutes due to foul trouble, but still managed to score 14 points on 6 of 8 shooting. Forward Reid Hipp scored 11 and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds before fouling out with 1:18 to play. D.J. Harvey, the 1A Player of the Year, had seven points, six rebounds and four steals.

Christ Church made just 1 of its 12 shots from beyond the arc, but were brilliant defensively, holding Bethune-Bowman to 17% shooting in the first half and 25% for the game. Terrance McFadden and Derik Simon led Bethune-Bowman with 11 points, apiece.

Lake View won the first Girls State Championship in school history, Saturday (SCHSL)

1A Girls State Championship

The 1A Girls State Championship went down to the wire before Jaleya Ford and Gwendasia Page came up with crucial plays down the stretch to help Lake View claim its first state title in a dramatic 49-46 victory over Denmark-Olar in Florence, Saturday. Ford, an all-state selection, led all scorers with 21 points and her basket in the final minute gave the Gators a one-point lead. Page (14 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals) was also named to the all-state team and sealed the game with a pair of foul shots in the final seconds.
