South Carolina doesn’t have a dire need for another tight end on the roster for 2024 with Josh Simon and three other scholarship tight ends planning to return, and another in the recruiting class, yet that didn’t dissuade coach Shane Beamer from reaching into the Portal and grabbing Brady Hunt (6-6 249) as a transfer from Ball State.
Hunt visited USC Thursday through Saturday and then announced his commitment to the Gamecocks late Sunday morning.
Hunt was a quarterback coming out of high school in Muncie, IN and decided then to stay home and play for the Cardinals. He passed for 3800 yards and 47 touchdowns in high school. But he was moved to tight end as a freshman and redshirted the 2021 season.
Hunt became the starting tight end in 2022 and showed great promise with 46 catches for 498 yards and five touchdowns. He was named a Freshman All-American by the FWAA.
Hunt entered the 2023 season on the Mackey Award Watch List. Unfortunately for him and the Cardinals, he suffered an ankle injury prior to the season opening game and later had surgery in October ending. He did not appear in a game in 2023.
Hunt is the eighth transfer commitment from the Portal for the Gamecocks. He gives USC 25 total newcomers for the 2024 class including two at tight end.
