One of the top remaining 2024 targets for USC, CB Jalewis Solomon (6-1 185) of Ellaville, GA made an unofficial visit over the weekend for the Florida game. Solomon decommitted from Auburn earlier in the week raising speculation he might flip to the Gamecocks. USC head coach Shane Beamer did issue a commitment alert for the 2024 class late Sunday morning.
Sunday night, Solomon confirmed that commitment announcement was for him. He posted on his social media that he had committed to the Gamecocks before leaving on Sunday morning.
USC secondary coach Torrian Gray never gave up on recruiting Solomon even after he committed to Auburn. He was able to win the day by convincing Solomon there’s a need and an opportunity awaiting him with the Gamecocks.
“He sees me playing as a lock down corner,” Solomon said. “He says I can play week one if I just come in and do my job. He sees me as a lock down corner for sure.”
Beamer also expressed his excitement over Solomon visiting Saturday and eventually notifying him of his decision.
“He was excited as soon as he saw me,” Solomon said. “He said he was pretty upset that they didn’t get the win. He said he needs guys like me to secure the win.”
Solomon arrived on Saturday morning and watched an offensive shootout between the Gamecocks and Gators. He was locked in on the play of the secondary.
“The development of the defensive backs is what really caught my eyes the most,” Solomon said. “There’s progression from year one and year two.”
After the game, Solomon was able to catch up with some of the players as well as head coach Shane Beamer and secondary coach Toran Gray.
“I went out with some of the players,” Solomon said. “They took me to their dormitory and told me how they live. I talked with all the coaches. They were excited to have me up. They were excited about my decommitment, and they were just really glad to have another chance at me.”
Solomon took an official visit to USC in June. He also was in for the spring game and the recruiting cookout function in late July. He committed to Auburn, where his brother plays, in August choosing the Tigers over USC, Texas A&M, Florida State and Kentucky.
Solomon is the second cornerback commitment for the Gamecocks 2024 class, which now numbers 16.
According to MaxPreps, through six games this season Solomon had three interceptions and four pass deflections. For his career, he has 12 picks and 18 breakups. He is also a receiver and had 30 catches for 595 yards and eight touchdowns through six games. For his career he has 183 catches for 2929 yards and 31 touchdowns.
