From the backyard of the Florida State Seminoles, Clemson Saturday nabbed a highly sought after cornerback prospect in Ashton Hampton (6-2 175) for their second commitment in as many days from a Florida recruit. Hampton, who attends Florida State University School, picked the Tigers over the hometown Seminoles, Arkansas, Florida, Miami and LSU.
Hampton was in the group of nearly 30 recruits who made their official visits to Clemson the first weekend in June. He followed that up with official visits to Florida, Louisville and Arkansas. Hampton also visited Clemson for a junior day in late January.
Hampton can play both corner and safety and was recruited for both positions. He was primarily recruited to Clemson by cornerbacks coach Mike Reed, an NFL Europe teammate of Hampton’s father who is the head coach at Arkansas-Pine Bluff. He also plays receiver for his high school team.
Last season Hampton registered 48 tackles with one interception and eight break ups. He has three career interceptions. He also caught 35 passes for 696 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior.
Hampton gives the Tigers 16 commitments for their 2024 class, all from outside of South Carolina. He’s the fourth for the secondary.
