Beamer reacts to Gator Bowl invite, Notre Dame matchup (AUDIO)

USC DE Jordan Burch and Gamecock defense will face Notre Dame in Jacksonville

USC will face Notre Dame December 30th in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville. This will mark the Gamecocks’ first appearance in the Gator Bowl since 1987 and first meeting with the Fighting Irish since 1984. Both teams are 8-4. USC quarterback Spencer Rattler has committed to play in the game, but Notre Dame starting quarterback Drew Pyne has opted to enter the Transfer Portal.

USC coach Shane Beamer met with the media late Sunday afternoon and expressed his excitement about the bowl game and the matchup with the Irish. Some of his other key comments:

  • Had a good conversation with Cam Smith and saw his tweet, no one else has told him they don’t plan to play in the bowl game.
  • Teasley and Adkins are both on the road giving them 10 assistants on the road recruiting. He expects Adkins back as OL coach next season.
  • No plan yet for the play caller for the game and probably won’t announce that so as not to give Notre Dame some idea of what the gameplan might look like.
  • Wants to have a normal game week of practices in Columbia before they break for Christmas.
  • Wishes Marcus Satterfield well with his new job at Nebraska, the opening at USC is very appealing, has heard from a lot of interesting candidates, no hire is imminent, he wants to make sure he has the right fit for the long term.
  • No plan yet for the play caller for the game and probably won’t announce that so as not to give Notre Dame some idea of what the gameplan might look like.
  • He would consider calling plays if that’s best for the team, has not ruled that out.
  • Josh Vann is questionable for the bowl game, has not been ruled out.
