#STRecruiting Notebook 12-13

The early signing period for college football begins Wednesday, and it’s on that day that most teams will sign the majority of their class. USC goes into the week with 19 commitments and Clemson with 12. Over the weekend, Dabo Swinney apparently changed his PWO offer to punter Jackson Smith of Saraland, AL to a full scholarship offer based on a tweet by Smith stating he will be signing Wednesday for a full scholarship. Smith made his official visit over the weekend. He’s ranked the #5 punter nationally in his class by Kohl’s Kicking Camps. He also was first team All-State as a receiver.

Clemson also had official visits over the weekend from committed prospects WR Antonio Williams of Dutch Fork, LB Wade Woodaz of Tampa and CB Toriano Pride of East St. Louis, ILL. Also on official visits were RB Trevor Etienne of Jennings, LA and DT Khurtiss Perry of Montgomery, AL. Etienne is the brother of former Clemson star running back Travis Etienne. He also has Florida and LSU on his short list. Perry only visited Sunday. Auburn and Alabama have been the top two with him.

USC landed a major defensive talent Saturday in Jaishawn Barham of Baltimore and hopes to follow up that recruiting win with another one Monday morning. LB Stone Blanton of Madison, MS is set to announce at 11:15 Eastern Time at his school. He has USC, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Texas A&M as his finalists. A stream of his announcement can be found at this LINK.

It’s possible the Gamecocks could hear some news from Chapin WR Zavier Short Monday. He has been committed to Appalachian State but since the Gamecocks offered him the first of the month, he has been giving them serious consideration.

Other high school prospects the Gamecocks continue to work going into this week include RB Ramon Brown of Midlothian, VA who has been committed to Virginia Tech; WR Camden Brown of Fort Lauderdale who took an official to Georgia over the weekend; DE James Pearce of Charlotte; TE Jack Johnson of Watkinsville, GA, a former LSU commitment, and DB DQ Smith of Spring Valley who also plays quarterback and wants to play that position in college. He’s looking at Georgia Southern for that.

USC continues to sort thru the Transfer Portal looking for immediate help. The Gamecocks have been in touch with former LSU QB Max Johnson, and they had an official visit this month from former Oklahoma TE Austin Stogner. Stogner took an official visit to Ohio State over the weekend. He also took an official visit to Iowa State. He also could end up returning to Oklahoma.

  1. I kinda feel bad for Williams of DF. Dabo played him like a fiddle. If they had REALLY wanted him, they would have offered MUCH earlier. They missed on a couple of their prototype receivers and decided to take Williams to keep him from going to Carolina. He” be in the portal in 1 or 2 years.
