#STRecruiting: #Gamecocks Woods in the transfer portal

Seventh Woods did not find the basketball bliss he was seeking in his hometown (Chris Gillespie)

Nearly two years to the day he announced he would transfer to his hometown school USC, guard Seventh Woods is leaving the Gamecocks. Matt Zenitz of AL.com reported Tuesday night Woods had entered the NCAA Transfer Portal, meaning he is looking for his third college basketball program.

Woods graduated from Hammond School in Columbia and with much fanfare signed with North Carolina in 2016. But he never found traction in Chapel Hill to match the hype. He played in 94 games for the Tar Heels but started just once. He averaged 8.7 minutes and less than 2 points per game.

In early June of 2019, Woods announced a transfer to USC, and it was hoped he would find comfort, and his game, back in his hometown. After sitting out the 2019-20 season, Woods did not have the positive impact on the Gamecocks that was expected as they struggled to a six-win season. In 18 games, he averaged 5.4 points and 1.9 assists per game.

In fairness to Woods, he dealt with multiple health and injury issues during his brief time with the Gamecocks.

Woods is the ninth scholarship player to leave Frank Martin’s program since the end of the season. However, two of them, Keyshawn Bryant and Jermaine Couisnard, are expected to return according to Martin. Both have their names in the NBA Draft. If they return, the Gamecocks will have 13 scholarships accounted for.

Here’s the list of players who have left since last season:

TJ MOSS
KEYSHAWN BRYANT
JUSTIN MINAYA
JERMAINE COUISNARD
TRAE HANNIBAL
JALYN MCCREARY
AJ LAWSON
TREY ANDERSON
SEVENTH WOODS
